Everton has signed former England winger Andros Townsend on a two-year deal, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.

Townsend, 30, was released after his contract with Crystal Palace expired at the end of last season.

The move to Merseyside will see Townsend paired with new Toffees manager Rafael Benitez, playing under the Spaniard at Newcastle.

“I think everyone knows what Everton are,” Townsend said in a statement.

“It’s a big football club, it has a lot of ambition, a club that is trying to get back to where it was in Europe and beyond. I will do everything I can to help clubs do this.”

Benitez’s appointment has been widely criticized by Everton as a former Liverpool manager in the region.

“Rafa had a lot of experience,” said Townsend. He did a lot of work along the way and in the training process, he didn’t leave any stone unturned.

“But more importantly, he’s a big man, a good manager, he talks to you all the time. I am sure it will be successful here.

Townsend, of England, made 13 seasons, made his name for Tottenham.

He moved to Newcastle in 2016 but left for Palace after the Magpies dropped out of the Premier League later that year.

“After 5 amazing years and countless memories, it is time to say goodbye to everyone at Crystal Palace,” says Townsend.

“I would like to say a big thank you to the president for bringing me Selhurst and giving me the opportunity to wear a red and blue dress, Sam (Allardyce) and Roy (Hodgson) for their confidence in me, and my teammates – those who were with us for the special time we had a mouth and a hole.
